The flow meter measures how much air enters the engine. The computer compares the value to what is expected by rpm, throttle and manifold pressure. When they don't match, it writes P0101.
Average. The car drives normally, but with less power and higher consumption. With diesels, it often comes out with emergency mode.
Petrol and diesel engines. Flow meter, air filter, sleeves, EGR, turbo.
What does P0101 mean
The code does not say that the flowmeter is broken, but that the value is "illogical". The reason may be the sensor itself, but also anything that changes the actual air flow: leak, clogged filter, open EGR valve. In some diesels, the combination with P0401 points to the EGR system.
Symptoms
- Weak power, "choking" on acceleration
- Rough idle or stalls when stopped
- Increased fuel consumption
- Black smoke on diesels
- Emergency mode with limited revolutions
| Can it be driven?
Yes, carefully. If the car goes into emergency mode or shuts down, do not drive it on the highway.
Common reasons
- Dirty flow meter — dust or oil mist on the heating element, often after "sport" oil air filters.
- Air leak after the flow meter — burst sleeve, loose clamp.
- Clogged or improperly installed air filter.
- Oxidized connector or broken wire.
- Stuck open EGR valve — some of the gases replace air.
- Faulty flow meter — after excluding other causes.
How we diagnose it
- We compare the reported air (g/s) to expectations at idle and revs.
- We check the air filter, sleeves and clamps.
- We check the coupling, the power supply and the sensor signal.
- We check the EGR valve and, on turbo engines, the turbo pressure.
