Ignition, breaks and gearing

P0011Camshaft "A" (bank 1) - too early timing / operation

Meaning

The motor has variable phases (VVT). The computer commands the angle of the camshaft, and the sensor reports that the shaft has advanced more than set or does not follow the command.

Urgency

Average. The car is usually driven, but if the chain is the cause, the delay can end in an expensive engine repair.

It affects

Variable-phase gasoline engines. Oil, VVT valve (solenoid), camshaft variator, timing chain.

What does P0011 mean

The camshaft variator is rotated by oil pressure, which is dosed by a solenoid valve. If the oil is dirty, the wrong viscosity, or low, or if the valve is stuck, the shaft won't sit where the computer wants it to. It's the same problem for the exhaust shaft P0014, and if the discrepancy is between the crankshaft and the camshaft — P0016.

Symptoms

  • Lamp "Check Engine"
  • Rough idle, especially when cold
  • Loss of power and increased consumption
  • Rattling from the front of the engine when starting (chain or variator)

| Can it be driven?

Yes, briefly. Check the oil level immediately. If the engine rattles on ignition or the code appears along with P0016, do not delay - the stretched chain may jump.

Common reasons

  1. Low, old or unsuitable oil — the most common and cheapest reason.
  2. Sticky VVT valve or blocked the sieve in front of it.
  3. Faulty variator on the camshaft.
  4. Timing chain stretched or a worn tensioner.
  5. Wiring problem to the valve or sensor (see P0340).

How we diagnose it

  1. We check the oil level and condition and when it was changed.
  2. We watch in real time the commands and the actual angle of the shaft.
  3. We test the VVT valve — resistance, stroke and actuation.
  4. We check the synchronization of the crankshaft and camshaft and the condition of the chain.
