P0700 is a "message" from the gearbox control to the engine computer: there is an error recorded in the gearbox. The reason itself is in a separate code that is read by the box module.
Medium to high. Often the box goes into emergency mode — it stays on the 3th gear. Driving like that puts a strain on the box.
Automatic, robotic and CVT gearboxes. Sensors, solenoids, oil, wiring.
What does P0700 mean
Many common code readers only show P0700 and stop there. The real information is in the gearbox module (TCM) — eg P0715 for the input shaft sensor or P0730 for wrong gear ratio. Without professional diagnostics that read TCM, there is no telling what is broken.
Symptoms
- The gearbox remains in one gear (emergency mode)
- Hard, delayed or abrupt shifts
- Skidding - revs increase, but the car does not accelerate
- Flashing gear indication on dashboard
| Can it be driven?
Only to the service station. In emergency mode, the box works with increased pressure and heat. If there's a skid, don't drive—the damage quickly becomes more expensive.
Common reasons
- Low or old oil in the box.
- Faulty solenoid in the hydraulic unit.
- RPM sensor on the input or output shaft (P0720).
- Wiring and connectors — oxidation, especially in case of oil leakage.
- Low voltage — low battery or bad ground.
- Mechanical wear — clutches, band brakes, hydrotransformer.
How we diagnose it
- We read the codes directly from the gearbox module.
- We check the level, color and smell of the oil.
- We check the power supply, ground and wiring.
- We test the solenoids and sensors and do a test drive with data tracking.
